CSX 2271
289 COBRA
CSX 2271 is 1 of 655 "Leaf Spring" Cobra's and was built with the more desirable "rack & pinion" steering system. It was invoiced to Shelby America on 12/18/63 and painted a Silver Minx with red interior. It was delivered with the class "A" accessory package which included WSW tire, chrome wire wheels, outside rear view mirror, radio and antenna.
This Cobra was originally purchased by Carl Keikhaefer of the Mercury-Keikhaefer outboard motor family who sold it in 1966 to Mike Gallagher. The car remained stock untill 1986 when Mike had it painted white. Bruce Larson, the legendary Drag Car Racer, purchesed the car in 1990 and sold it to, Barry F. Smith in 1992. Barry has sold the Cobra to its current owner.
In 2000, Barry commissioned "Classic MotorSports" of Northville, Mi to completely restore CSX 2271 to its original pristine condition. The 2 year restoration process included:
Complete disassembly including removal of the body from the sub-structure
Sleeving the 3" main chassi's tubes to restore the chassi's rigidity
Powder coating the chasis with satin black finish
New axel bearings and suspension bushings
Rebuilding the brake caliper
New brake & clutch master cylinders
Body refinishing by Special Projects, Inc of Plymouth, MI
New convertible top
New interior with all gages refurbished
Engine rebuild by Kinetic Racing Engines if Westland, MI
New exhaust system with original and hard to locate cast iron exhaust manifolds
This vehicle drives as good as it looks and can be easily taken on vintage car tours with complete confidence.
This is a Cobra with a full Pedigree and Provenance and will be a Cornerstone in any Shelby, Cobra, Sportscar or Muscle car Collection.
